In Defense of Kanye West’s Leaked Track–Mama’s Boy.

I am a huge Kanye fan, so I was stoked when this past Wednesday Kanye West released a new track called Mama’s Boy on his personal blog.

If you can remember, just last fall he released a new track every friday and dubbed the process “GOOD Friday”, thereby, him releasing a track on his blog was not anything peculiar.

However, the next day Kanye’s (wait for it..) rep released a statement stating that the track was in fact, “bogus”.

“The version of the Kanye West recording ‘Mama’s Boy’ that arrived on blog sites earlier this week is entirely bogus and unsanctioned, and violates the artist’s creative intentions…the result in no way resembles the final song Kanye West intended his fans to hear, and he is deeply disappointed that one of the most personal, meaningful and special songs he has ever written would reach people in this way. Needless to say, measures are being taken to identify and prosecute the persons responsible for leaking this material.”

[Now for those of you who are still in shock over the fact that the outspoken and unfiltered Kanye West has a rep, let’s just set that aside till later.]

The track uses Kanye’s vocals and lyrics but the production and beat were solely made by a separate and unknown producer. What interests me the most about the track is well.. is how great it is! It’s still not known who took Wests vocal track and put the beat around it–but the person who did it surely does have talent.

I can fully understand the sentimental value of the track, West states that it took him 33 years to write it and it is one of the most meaningful songs he has ever written. The song speaks of his mom, West and his mother were notoriously close and West often notes his entire success and career to her.

However, the track seems to channel an aspect of Kanye West that has been lost in recent years– a sound entirely different from his most recent work My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

In MBDTF West each track resembled more of a grandiose anthem with guest appearances and lengthy detailed instrumental breaks. This grandeur  feeling of the album was phenemenoal, but it was incredibly different from Wests previous work, work that was found in the “College trilogy”.

Mama’s Boy seems to channel that old school Kanye West that we immediately came to know and love upon his arrival in the music scene–smooth, soul inspired samples and an easy flow.

Mama’s Boy encompasses a 70’s styled sample with looped pitched vocals and an echoed chorus that floats throughout the song. The production also entails laid back piano, a grooving drum beat, and small nuances that you’d only find from a professional grade producer.

Kanye’s flow also gives the song an easy, smooth and bouncy feel, everything is on point and on key. The lyrics are powerful as well, West speaks on his childhood and his anger that he felt in his dealings with his moms boyfriend– Kanye tells the story in an emotional tirade in a way that only Mr. West can bring us.

Now I too, thought it was a bit odd that such an angry and emotional track would be put over such a happy and cheerful sample–but that’s also what makes it so great. The laid back sample emphasizes West’s anger as he calls out his mama’s boyfriend into the ring–very powerful track.

The production and beat flow so smoothly over the lyrics that it’s clear that even if West didn’t produce it–the person who did surely has talent.

I understand Wests attachment to the track, when you listen to it–you can’t help but feel for Kanye that such a meaningful song was leaked. But I also think it would be a shame if this unknown producer got punished rather than receiving at least some credit for some amazing production skills.

I really have mixed feelings about the outcome–should the guy come forward? Should West take legal action?

I don’t know, but I do know that I really dig the sample and beat, and I hope that West hits us with something similar in the near future–and that this mysterious producer comes forward and maybe shows us more of their work.

Any publicity is good publicity–and this small media frenzy surely has plenty of people awaiting Wests authentic version of Mama’s Boy, especially with its phenomenal flow and lyrics.

You can find the “bogus” track floating around the internet, I probably shouldn’t post it because it will probably be taken off the web in the next week or so but here it is:

Here is the acapella version that West dropped at Facebook HQ, in this video you can see Wests attachment to the track (and his amazing lyricism that makes him reign king):
